Brow Lamination vs Microblading: Which Is Right for Me?

The short answer

Choose brow lamination if you have a fair amount of natural brow hair and want fuller, fluffier brows with no needles — it lasts 6–8 weeks and costs far less. Choose microblading if you have very little hair or bald patches and want semi-permanent definition for 12–18 months.

It’s the question we hear most at our Cloverdale studio, usually right after someone scrolls a dozen “brow transformation” videos: should I laminate, or should I just get microblading?

They solve different problems. Here’s how to tell which one is yours.

What is the actual difference?

Brow lamination works with the hair you already have. A lifting cream softens each hair so we can brush it upward and into shape, then a setting lotion holds it there. Nothing goes into your skin. It lasts 6–8 weeks and fades gradually.

Microblading is a cosmetic tattoo. A hand tool with fine needles deposits pigment into the skin in hair-like strokes. It lasts 12–18 months (sometimes longer), needs healing time, and usually a touch-up session.

Who is brow lamination right for?

You’re a great candidate for lamination if:

  • You have a decent amount of brow hair, even if it grows in different directions
  • Your brows look thin because the hairs lie flat or point down
  • You’re tired of brow gel failing halfway through a rainy Fraser Valley day
  • You want to try a fuller look without committing for a year

Many clients who come in asking about microblading leave with lamination — and discover they never needed the tattoo at all.

Who is microblading right for?

Microblading makes more sense when there simply isn’t enough hair to work with: after years of over-plucking, with hair loss from medical treatment, or with alopecia. Lamination can’t create hair where there is none.

If that’s you, an HD tint can still soften the look of gaps in the meantime, and we’re always happy to give you an honest opinion.

Does either one hurt?

Lamination is painless — most people relax or doze. Microblading involves numbing cream and is usually described as scratchy or uncomfortable rather than painful, but there is a healing period afterwards.

Can you have both?

Yes, with spacing. If you already have microblading, lamination can make the real hairs on top sit beautifully over the strokes. Wait until the tattoo is fully healed — at least 4–6 weeks after any session — and book lamination at least a week before your next touch-up.

Our honest take

Start with lamination. It’s affordable, reversible, and tells you a lot about what your natural brows can do. If, after a couple of rounds, you still want more definition than your hair can give, then consider microblading with a licensed artist.

Quick questions

Yes, by a lot. Brow lamination is $50 at Clover in Cloverdale; microblading in Metro Vancouver typically costs several hundred dollars plus a touch-up.

Not on the same day. Wait at least 4–6 weeks after microblading heals before laminating, and book lamination at least a week before any microblading session.

Lamination uses only your own hair, so it looks naturally full. Well-done microblading looks natural too, but it adds pigment to the skin rather than working with existing hair.
